The genius of 한글
“Because the language of our country differs from that of China, it does not fit Chinese characters… Pitying this, I have made twenty-eight new letters, so that everyone may learn them easily and use them comfortably every day.”
King Sejong’s preface · 훈민정음 언해본 (1459)Until then, Koreans wrote in Chinese characters, which only the elite had years to learn. King Sejong created an alphabet that mirrors the shape of the mouth, built for the people.
His scholars said a wise person could learn it in one morning, and even the slowest in ten days. You can test that claim.
